As part of the University’s employability agenda, the Policy Innovation Hub is focussed on providing hands-on experience for Griffith students from a variety of courses including film, journalism and government and international relations.

The Policy Innovation Hub team worked together with several Griffith University student interns from the School of Government and International Relations to produce a data visualisation for the 2016 Federal Election coverage. The electorate data, executed in a specialised visualisation tool called Tableau, was awarded “Viz of the Day”, a competitive international award, chosen by Tableau. The visualisation has been viewed over 5,000 times.

Australia in Transition: presented by Avid Reader and The Conversation

by Anne Tiernanon 17 May 2016in Federal Politics

I joined Yassmin Abdel-Magied, George Megalogenis and Paul Barclay to discuss George’s Quarterly Essay Balancing Act: Australia Between Recession and Renewal at the sold out event for Avid Reader and The Conversation.

panel

It was a vibrant conversation which covered a number of topics including Australia’s recent political volatility, institutional memory, Australia’s current economic state and our changing cultural landscape.

Peter Greste and Yassmin Abdel-Magied

Yassmin was hilarious and energetic and it was great to have such an intelligent young representative on the panel – I loved seeing some young people in the audience showing interest in politics too. Peter Greste even turned up, sitting front row and asked questions at the end – see the video below for this part.

Our resident journalist and photographer, Erin Maclean took the fabulous photos I have featured in this article and has written an article from the event which is  on our Machinery of Government blog.

Thanks to Hugh Gormley who live-streamed the event on You Tube, and has made the video available below. For more on the discussion, search the hashtag #avidcon
